How To Change Careers

People seek to change careers for many different reasons. Your career goals or values have changed, you may have  discovered new interests that you would like to incorporate into your job, you may wish to make more money, or have more flexible hours, just to name a few.

To enable you to decide and be clear of the reasons start by looking in the mirror, and metaphorical mirror i mean. This is because you will need to take time to evaluate your present situation, to explore career options, to decide if your career needs making over, and to choose a career that will be more satisfying for you. Be honest with yourself here. And absolutely invest some time in getting to know yourself. It be  might tricky, uncomfortable or uncertain but its worth doing to enable you to make the right decision for you.

Some options you can take to start a career change are:

1) Small daily actions- By taking small daily actions this can help get the ball rolling without making you feel overwhelmed. A 10 minute action for example could be emailing a contact who works in a field of interest. In reality its small, consistent actions taken on a daily basis that prove to be the most helpful

2) Take your time

3) Focus on quality not quantity

4) Ask for help

5)Do your research

6) Find the path of least resistance

7) Manage your expectations

8) Check out job options

9) Upgrade your skills

10) Set up job shadow

Throughout our careers, we may find ourselves in a role that takes more from us than it gives in terms of money, happiness, or energy, sometimes , its all three. Changing  careers especially after years of investing in your job can be very frightening. But the truth is the cost of doing nothing of staying in a job that depletes you is much higher.

Studies show that sticking it out despite your unhappiness leads to emotional exhaustion, illness, and burnout. Instead of dwelling on what you will lose. Imagine a career that makes you feel challenged, happy and fulfilled. If that vision looks, feels and sounds better, shift your efforts away from focusing on avoiding percieved loss and look towards your new journey.

As long as you are vigilant about maintaining healthy boundaries and are ruthless with self care, you can make it through this transition time.
